Should I Invest in Disaster Recovery?

by J Shah

In today’s technology dependent work place, it is imperative that companies plan and invest in disaster recovery.  Disaster recovery (DR) is an area of security planning that aims to protect an organization from the effects of significant negative events. Having a disaster recovery strategy in place enables an organization to maintain or quickly resume its operations following a disruption.

The first step is to conduct an audit to identify the critical systems and processes.  Next step is to bifurcate the data and access controls.   For data, identify the systems that are hosting the data and implement a robust backup system (onsite and/or on the cloud) that will allow a baremetal restore quickly in the event of a disaster.   For access controls, implement a monitored firewall with IDS (Intrusion Detection System) and IPS (Intrusion Prevention System).   Having both a good backup system and good monitored firewall will allow your company recover and resume operations fast after a disaster.
